How effective is the combination of your product and ancillary texts?
How
and where the film is being sold and shown and how they advertise it. A film
would be distributed well if it is shown in multiple countries and can get
enough viewers to gain a profit along with the sized audience that the film was
marketed for. The film distributor is important because without advertising and
promotion the trailer would not be seen or recognized, the film distributor
also researches into demographics and target audience to make distribution as
effective as possible. The film distributor
decides where it would be best to advertise the film in areas such as cities
and in what countries it would appeal to the most. The distributor works within
a budget and tries to get the best for the money available by finding where the
target audience lives.
Advertising and promotion techniques consist of social media, magazines, posters, newspapers and radio. Advertising on social media is cheap and easy because it’s the consumers of the product that does the promotion. With advertising in magazines it can cost a lot of money to get an ad in a popular magazine. Radio is cheap to advertise on but does not focus on your audience; the advertisement is to everyone, which may be both positive and negative.
Marketing is different depending on the audience because with the horror genre you would need to know your audience specifically to be able to appeal to them. Age is a specific demographic that you would need to research; you would want to advertise on social media, music and fashion magazines.
The value of audience feedback to distribution companies is
vital as it allows the company to know where the best platforms to promote
certain products for and also the best geographical locations for distributing
magazines, and putting up adverts. With audience research companies can find products
which are worth advertising and what products would not be in certain demographics.
The Woman in Black
The size of the campaign was big due to the large amount of money spent on advertising it. They used Daniel Radcliffe as a way of promoting the film due to his massive fan base from the Harry Potter film series. Daniel Radcliffe also advertised the film in interviews and on chat shows. To reinforce the fact that the campaign was large there were teaser trailers and posters as well as the main trailer and poster.
The classification for our trailer is 15 which is our target audience; there is violence and blood within our trailer which may make it unsuitable for a younger audience. The relationship between my trailer and poster is that the poster shows the main girl in the film standing in the graveyard which is a scene within the trailer, the poster is distorted which is related to possession within the trailer. The value of getting your trailer on a magazine front cover is very valuable because people looking for other types of magazines will also see the trailer, it makes a huge difference whether your magazine stands out because people would not have to buy the magazine to be exposed to it.

What have you learnt from your audience feedback?
Audience feedback is important as it allows you to target your audience
so you can advertise as effectively as possible, it also helps with
distribution as it allows you to see where the majority or a large section of
your audience is. Audience feedback helps with marketing The Woman in Black had
a big marketing campaign which consisted of teaser trailers and posters to
begin with, they then moved onto their main campaign with the main trailer and
posters and they begin campaigning on social media as it allows for large
coverage over many different types of people. They also reached out to people
in newspapers as part of their advertisement. They created mood boards for
their target audience so they can specifically advertise to them; they then
made a broader mood board to cover more people of different film tastes. Daniel
Radcliffe was a large part of their campaign as he has many fans from the Happy
Potter films, and many of those fans hit the target audience. Radcliffe also
went on a lot of popular chat shows and had done many interviews to use his
popularity to its full potential. Finally The Woman in Black marketing campaign
used merchandise, schools and freebies to help with promotion. All of these
things have an element of audience feedback as comments across these platforms
would be made by the public on what they think.
With our
Horror Trailer we recorded the class’s comments made after watching our first
draft of the trailer so we can use their comments to improve our trailer, we
also had comments from students and teachers about how we can improve it to
suit our target audience. The students that we had the comments from fit our
demographic as they’re all students aged between 17 and 19. The students had a
mixture of middle to lower class background as well as a mixture of gender. The
students lived in a built up town and near big cities which fits our target
audience. Overall the students fit most or all the demographics set for our
target audience.
The comments
that were made were to make our storyline more understandable as we didn’t make
much reference to the demon possessing the girl, which was a common response to
our trailer another popular response, is that there is no jump scare at the end
which is what people were expecting. People commented on how the music did not
fit with the trailer as it did not build up and speed up enough which made the
trailer anti climatic. We got many positive views on it ranging from good
angles and zooms to good lighting and narrative. Many of the comments were the
same in our recorded feedback which highlight main problem areas and can give
us reassurance that we have made an appealing trailer.
We used this
feedback, we added in more shots which relation to the demon, we added a shot
with an Ouija board and we’ve implemented a new soundtrack to help build up
pace within the trailer, with this new music we people can now hear dialogue
and ambient sound clearer. The feedback contained comments on no jump scare, we
added in a scream with the main girl screaming in her hands, which creates a
shock at the end of the trailer.
